The company was founded in 1839 by the glove maker Jakob Roeckl. He initially ran a shop with handicraft production in Munich's Kaufingerstraße 19. This was followed by a tannery and a dye works, as well as the development of a new, patented tanning process. With his focus on the "upper class" Roeckl achieved the appointment to the Royal Bavarian Court Supplier and counted King Ludwig II and Empress Sissi among his customers. The factory building built by Christian, Jakob Roeckl's son, south of Munich city center in 1870 on today's Roecklplatz in the Dreimühlenviertel is still the company's headquarters. In addition, the first sales branches followed in Berlin, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt, Cologne and Bremen at this time. In 1890 Heinrich Roeckl took over the management of the company at the age of 24 after the early death of his father. The company expanded through the establishment of further branches and exported to America. During the Nazi era, the company took part in the exploitation of forced laborers under Heinrich Roeckl, under whose leadership the company manufactured gas masks for use in the war.

After the destruction in the war, leather and glove production and the branch network were rebuilt in 1948 under the management of his son Heinrich Franz Roeckl. When Stefan Roeckl took over management of the company, the headquarters at Roecklplatz were rebuilt in 1966; an expansion of the store range to include fashion accessories such as scarves also took place at this time. In 1972 the development of a new glove cut followed, the "patented cut" as a prelude to the development of the Roeckl sports gloves. The traditional way of working, originally from France, was panel cut. The glove-making profession has almost died out in Germany. The last German master glove maker still employed by Roeckl is Olaf Gebhard in 2007.

In 1992 the Romanian production facility Roeckl Romania was founded. The complete relocation of production from Bavaria to Southeast Europe was one of the most critical moments in the company's history. In 2003, Annette Roeckl, the sixth generation, took over the sole management of Roeckl Gloves and Accessories GmbH & Co. KG, after brother Stefan Roeckl junior agreed to take over the sports division in 2000. In the same year, the sports gloves product area was spun off as Roeckl Sports (Roeckl Sporthandschuhe GmbH & Co. KG) under the management of Stefan Roeckl. Annette Roeckl expanded the accessories collection and founded her own bag production facility in Sebeş, Romania , in 2009 . In 2009, additional Roeckl partner stores were opened in Amsterdam and Warsaw, as well as four shop-in-shop sales areas near Karstadt in Munich, Hamburg, Berlin and Cologne. In 2010 Roeckl had 23 branches of its own and a worldwide sales presence.

On March 24, 2017, the company filed for bankruptcy under self-administration . Eight out of 19 stores in Germany had to close. The bankruptcy petition was withdrawn in May 2017.

In 2019 Roeckl celebrated its 180th anniversary.
