Dan Goggin (born May 31, 1943 in Alma , Michigan , USA ) is an American author, composer and songwriter for musicals.

biography

Goggin began his career as a singer in the Broadway production of Luther , in which Albert Finney played the lead role. He then toured the States for five years with a folk duo, The Saxons , before starting the music for the off-Broadway musical Hark! To compose. After this production, Goggin began not only to compose the music for revues, but also to write the lyrics for it. He made contemporary events, trends and people the content of the revues.

Main work

His school days with the Order of the Marywood Dominican Sisters and the positive life experiences as a seminarist in Detroit gave the impetus to design a successful series of greeting cards with nuns. In 1984 he developed a cabaret, The Nunsense Story, together with the author Steve Hayes . Goggin revised the play and staged Nunsense again in 1986. For this he received the Outer Circle Award for best off-Broadway musical. After the musical The Fantasticks from 1960, Nunsense is the second most successful off-Broadway production. So far it has been performed in more than 5000 productions and translations in 21 languages around the world. The German premiere took place on December 8, 1989 at the Kammerspiele in Düsseldorf . The Swiss premiere took place on December 31, 1989 in the basement stage in St. Gallen.

Other works

Goggin then wrote the book and music for A One-Way Ticket To Broadway and Balancing Act , but it did not come close to the success of Nunsense.

Even a sequel entitled Nunsense II: The Second Coming , which premiered on November 20, 1992 at the Seven Angels Theater in Waterbury CT (German premiere on November 22, 1994), could not build on the success of the first part.

The subject never let go of him, and so he created the following other works:

  • Sister Amnesia's Country Western Nunsense Jamboree (premiered December 1, 1995); German title: Sister Amnesias Country & Western Non (n) sense
