The International Alliance against the Islamic state was formed to the terrorist acting Sunni - Islamist militia Islamic State fight (IS). The coalition includes some Western and Arab states as well as Turkey .

history

The United States called on 5 September 2014 at the NATO summit in Wales Newport (Gwent) , an international military alliance against IS in life. Then there were the Netherlands (October 2014 to July 2016) and later Belgium (since June 2016), each with several F-16 fighter-bombers .

A few days later, US President Barack Obama appointed former general and former commander of the International Security Assistance Force John R. Allen as special envoy for the alliance against IS. Allen's successor in this office has been Brett McGurk since October 2015 .

September 2014

On September 22, 2014, the first US-led air strike by the International Alliance against ISIS took place in Syria. In addition to the United States Air Force and United States Navy (with cruise missiles ), fighter jets from Saudi Arabia , Bahrain , Jordan and the United Arab Emirates have also participated. The attacks targeted 50 targets in the northern Syrian province of Raqqa . An IS headquarters was destroyed in the provincial capital Raqqa and a checkpoint was hit in the province of Deir ez-Zor .

On September 24, 2014, US bombers attacked a building belonging to the Syrian Khorasan group , killing 15 people and completely destroying the building. This group is part of the Al-Nusra Front and is considered a terrorist organization in the United States. The Arab members of the alliance do not participate in the attack on this group, as the Khorasan are supported by Qatar , among others .
