Brett H. McGurk (born April 20, 1973 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American attorney and diplomat . From October 2015 until the end of 2018 he was the US special envoy for the International Alliance against the Islamic State .

Life

McGurk grew up in West Hartford , Connecticut . He studied political science at the University of Connecticut , where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996 and a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University's Law School in 1999 .

After working for various judges, McGurk worked for Kirkland & Ellis for a short time . He also taught at the University of Virginia School of Law. In 2004 he returned to the civil service as legal advisor to US Ambassador John Negroponte and the coalition's interim administration in Iraq . As such, McGurk helped draft the country's new constitution. In 2005 McGurk moved to the US National Security Council. After changing government in 2009, McGurk was one of three political officials that Obama took over from his predecessor.

In October 2015, US President Barack Obama appointed McGurk as special envoy for the US-led International Alliance against Islamic State . He replaced John R. Allen , who had served as his deputy since September 16, 2014. On December 21, 2018, he submitted his resignation at the end of the year. Like Defense Secretary James Mattis the day before, he justified this with the decision made by President Donald Trump to withdraw the US forces stationed in Syria. Trump reacted mockingly to the resignation on Twitter. He pretended not to know McGurk and called him a "busybody".
