history

In 1908 Stewart Shepard and Robert McCormick founded a law firm in Chicago . McCormick, grandson of the Chicago Tribune founder Joseph Medill , left the firm as early as 1920 to work as publisher of the paper.

Weymouth Kirkland , who joined the firm in 1915, subsequently represented the Tribune and other newspapers, particularly in cases of personal rights . He and Howard Ellis , who joined the firm the same year as Kirkland, made several press law history . For example, Ellis defended the right to “objective criticism” which is now a fundamental part of freedom of speech in the United States .

As a result, the firm expanded and also became active in other areas of law, for example through the accession of the renowned criminal defense attorney Hammond Chaffetz in 1938, which contributed significantly to its growth. In the following years the original name of the law firm Shepard & McCormick changed several times, until the name Kirkland & Ellis was finally established in 1972.

Kirkland & Ellis now advises clients worldwide on mergers & acquisitions and private equity transactions, intellectual property, restructuring and tax law, and also represents them in national and international litigation. The law firm is one of the law firms with the highest turnover in the world.
