The operation Inherent Resolve is the military intervention by the United States against the terrorist militia Islamic State in Iraq and Syria . The name means something like "Operation Natural Resolve" and, according to a statement from the US Central Command in Tampa , Florida , should reflect the "unwavering determination and deep dedication in the fight against IS". The operation is part of the international alliance against the Islamic State .

Allies

The Inherent Resolve Kinetic Strike group (24) includes the USA, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Bahrain, Jordan, Poland, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Morocco, Qatar, Belgium, Denmark, France , Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Spain and Turkey.

In addition to the USA, other countries have launched military operations against IS. This is what Great Britain calls its operation against IS Operation Shader and Germany Operation Counter Daesh .

commitment

The mission, which began in the second half of 2014, initially only related to targets in Iraq, but was soon expanded to include IS targets in Syria. The aim is to significantly weaken the IS and to train local forces against the IS.

German tornadoes have been flying over Syria and Iraq as part of Operation Inherent Resolve since January 2015 to collect reconnaissance data.

The battle for Kobanê was seen as a key strategic point. In spring 2016, the Syrian army captured the city of Palmyra from the hands of IS with the help of the Russian air force . In the summer of 2016, the Iraqi army, in cooperation with local militias, took the city of Fallujah . At around the same time, Kurdish troops launched an offensive on Manbij in Syria near the Turkish border.

In June 2016, the Syrian and Iraqi armies began planning to conquer the cities of Ar-Raqqah in Syria and Mosul (see: Battle of Mosul ) in Iraq. By January 2017 the eastern part of Mosul had been liberated.

Results so far

  • ISIS has lost 30% of its territory in Iraq since the operation began.
  • Loss of important cities (Fallujah, Rahmadi) in Iraq
  • Oil trade, an important source of income for IS, was severely restricted by air strikes.
  • The freedom of movement of IS is also severely restricted by the constant presence of fighter jets and drones of the coalition, so that IS can no longer operate safely.
  • Local forces such as the Free Syrian Army or the Kurdish Peshmerga are specifically equipped and trained, as a result of which their effectiveness increases immensely.

By March 2018, around 32,000 air strikes had been carried out against IS and around 100,600 bombs were dropped. More than 27,000 fighters and over 120 ISIS leaders were killed in these attacks. 80% of the air strikes were carried out by the US military as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

According to the US armed forces, at least 484 civilians were killed in attacks by the coalition against IS between 2014 and May 2017. According to the CJTF-OIR High Command, the allied grazing forces flew a total of 33,931 air strikes from August 2014 to January 2019. In the process, 1,257 civilians were officially accidentally killed.
