Abu Muslim al-Turkmani

Abu Muslim al-Turkmani ( Arabic أبو مسلم التركماني, DMG Abū Muslim at-Turkumānī ; * unknown; † August 18, 2015 near Mosul , Iraq ) was a leading member of the Islamic State terrorist militia . Turkmani was also called Fadil Ahmad Abdullah al-Hiyali (فاضل أحمد عبد الله الحيالي / Fāḍil Aḥmad ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥiyālī ) and Hajji Muʿtaz (الحاج معتز / al-Ḥāǧǧ Muʿtaz ) known. He was Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's deputy in Iraq.

During the reign of Saddam Hussein , Turkmani belonged to the Iraqi military intelligence service Directorate of General Military Intelligence (DGMI or DMI; Arabic: Mudīriyyat al-Istichbārāt al-ʿAskariyya al-ʿĀmma). He is said to have practiced a moderate form of Islam at the time. After the regime was overthrown in 2003, he joined the Sunni resistance and fought against the US- led occupation forces and the Shiite- dominated new central government in Baghdad . This resistance included several former followers of Saddam Hussein, especially from the military sector.

Abu Muslim al-Turkmani and Baghdadi probably met in 2004 in the US prison camp Camp Bucca in Iraq. According to The Guardian , a total of 17 of the top 25 Islamic State leaders were held in US prisons. Together with Baghdadi and Abu Ali al-Anbari , he formed the leadership of the Islamic State (IS). Turkmani is said to have had the greatest influence on Baghdadi, making it number two in ISIS. According to the organizational structure of IS, Turkmani were subordinate to seven governors for the Iraqi provinces.

After the US Department of Defense erroneously reported the death of Abu Muslim al-Turkmani in an air strike in mid-December 2014, according to a US government spokesman, he died in a missile attack using a drone near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on August 18, 2015 In mid-October 2015, an IS spokesman confirmed his death.
