Denis Nikolajewitsch Voronenkow ( Russian Денис Николаевич Вороненков ; born April 10, 1971 in Gorky , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; †  March 23, 2017 in Kiev , Ukraine ) was a Russian lawyer , politician ( CPDRF ) and member of the Duma .

Life and politics

Denis Voronenkov was a member of the Communist Party of Russia (CPdRF) and a member of the Duma since 2011 . In this capacity he voted for the annexation of Crimea , but later stated that as a member of parliament he had not voted for the annexation at the time because he was not present at the meeting. Another MP used his voting card at the time.

He was married to Marija Petrovna Maksakowa-Igenbergs (stage name Marija Maksakowa ), a German-Russian opera singer and former politician of the United Russia party , since 2015 . She was a member of the Duma from 2011 to 2016. The couple has one child. At the end of 2014, investigations into Voronenkov began as part of corruption proceedings.

At the end of 2016, Voronenkov and his family fled to Ukraine. There he received Ukrainian citizenship in December 2016. In a television interview, he claimed that he had advised against the annexation of Crimea to Russian President Putin . In addition, Voronenkov repeatedly criticized the Russian government and called the annexation of Crimea by Russia illegal.

For the Ukrainian leadership, he was an important witness in the ongoing proceedings against ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia in 2014 .

Denis Voronenkov was shot dead in front of the Palace Hotel in the center of Kiev in Shevchenko Raion on March 23, 2017 . His bodyguard managed to injure the shooter. Both were hospitalized, where the assassin died a short time later.
