ath-thaura ( Arabic الثورة, DMG aṯ-Ṯaura ; formerly at-Tabqa  /الطبقة / aṭ-Ṭabaqa ) is a Syrian city located in ar-Raqqa Governorate , about 55 km west of the city of ar-Raqqa .

To the south is the at-Tabqa military airfield .

history

ath-Thaura was formerly called at-Tabqa . The name "ath-Thaura" literally means "the revolution", based on the revolution of March 8 , when the all-Arab Ba'ath Party and the Ba'ath Party in Iraq took power in Syria through a coup. The Tabqa dam , which creates a connection between the Euphrates and Lake Assad , was built near ath-Thaura. The city had a population of 69,425 at the last census in 2004.

In the Syrian civil war since 2011 , the city was under the rule of various groups. On May 10, 2017, the city and the dam fell into the hands of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). In the course of an offensive on the IS stronghold ar-Raqqa , the SDF, which are supported by the international alliance against the Islamic State , attacked IS in Ath-Thaura in April 2017. Securing the dam was an important point.

As a result of the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria in 2019 , the city of ath-Thaura was taken over by the Syrian army .
