The military airfield at-Tabqa is a base of the Syrian Air Force about five kilometers south of the city of al Tabqa (or ath-Thaura) .
In 2014, in the course of the Syrian civil war , fighting broke out over the base, which units of the Islamic State (IS) tried to conquer in several waves of attacks. On August 23, 2014, the commander described the airport as safe, according to reports from the Syrian government. On August 25, 2014, it became known that the airport had been captured by IS militias; there was talk of several hundred dead in the fighting. During the ar Raqqa offensive in 2016, the military airport was retaken by the Syrian Democratic Forces (DKS).
As a result of the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria in 2019 , the military airfield was taken over by the Syrian army .
