Staffan de Mistura
Staffan Domingo de Mistura (born January 25, 1947 in Stockholm ) is an Italian-Swedish diplomat. It was in July 2014. UN Special Envoy for Syria appointed (Special Envoy for Syria) and was a wider public in connection with the siege of kobanî and the mediation efforts of the UN in the Syrian civil war known.
Life
De Mistura is the son of a Swedish mother and a father who comes from a noble family from Šibenik (Sebenico) in Dalmatia (now part of Croatia ). Dalmatia had long been part of the Republic of Venice . The Italian-speaking population living there either left this area or were forced to do so after the Second World War.
De Mistura grew up on the island of Capri and in Rome , where he attended the Jesuit school Istituto Massimiliano Massimo . He then studied political science at the Roman University of La Sapienza .
In 1971 he began his professional career at the United Nations . He worked for three decades for the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Food Program of the United Nations , but also for UNICEF and as the UN Secretary-General's special envoy . Over the years he has served in several countries around the world, including Cyprus , Ethiopia , Sudan , Afghanistan , Albania , Iraq , former Yugoslavia , Somalia , Rwanda and Lebanon .
From late 2011 to early 2013 he was State Secretary in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . Then the Italian government sent him on a diplomatic mission to India . He also became President of the European Institute of Peace in Brussels, Director of the Swedish Villa San Michele on Capri and Swedish Honorary Consul there .
Staffan de Mistura is a Swedish and Italian citizen. His title of nobility “ Marchese ” is not recognized by the Republic of Italy. De Mistura speaks Swedish, Italian, English, French, German, Spanish and some Arabic. He has two daughters.
De Mistura became the third UN special envoy to Syria in 2014 after Kofi Annan and Lakhdar Brahimi ; During his tenure, among other things, an air attack by the US air force on the Syrian army and an attack by the Russian or Syrian air force on a UN supply convoy two days later, despite a previously agreed ceasefire . In October 2016, he offered the rebels and terrorists in East Aleppo to accompany them protectively when they left the city. He pointed out that otherwise Aleppo would be completely destroyed within the next two months and thousands of civilians would lose their lives.
In October 2018, he announced his resignation as UN special envoy for the end of the following month. The designated successor is the previous ambassador of Norway to China, Geir Pedersen .
