The Istituto Massimiliano Massimo (usually just called Istituto Massimo ) is a Catholic school in the Italian capital, Rome . It is named after the Jesuit Massimiliano Massimo and encompasses all school levels provided for in the Italian school system , from kindergarten to upper secondary school . The school body is the Jesuit order .

history

The origins of the Istituto Massimo , like those of the Pontifical Gregorian University, go back to a school ( Collegio Romano ) founded by Ignatius von Loyola in 1551 in what was then Via Nuova Capitolina (today Via dell'Aracoeli at the Capitol ) , which was housed in the monumental Palazzo del Collegio Romano moved in. The school received the right to award academic degrees from Pope Paul IV as early as 1556 . It thus included both a college and a secondary school for the next three hundred years .

In 1870 the Italian state confiscated the school building in order to set up a state high school there (Liceo Ginnasio “Ennio Quirino Visconti”) . For this reason the Collegio Romano had to move out. The university section was temporarily housed in the Palazzo Gabrielli-Borromeo and subsequently developed into the independent Gregorian University . The high school section of the Collegio Romano , however, was dissolved. The Jesuit Massimiliano Massimo carried out its reconstruction. In 1873 he inherited the Palazzo Peretti (also known as Palazzo Sisto ) next to the new Roma Termini train station , which he had torn down. In its place, on behalf of Massimo, a new building was built for the old school between 1883 and 1886, the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme . In 1960, the Istituto Massimo moved to the modern EUR district (now Europe ) southwest of the city center due to the increase in the number of students . The first student was accepted in 1973, and the classes have been mixed since 1987 .
