Arsenios Kardamakis ( Greek Ἀρσένιος Καρδαμάκης , born October 31, 1973 in Heraklion , Crete ) has been Greek Orthodox Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Central Europe since November 3, 2011 . On November 30, 2011 he succeeded the incumbent Michael Staikos, who died in October 2011 .

Life

Arsenios Kardamakis graduated from high school and the ecclesiastical academy in Athens , where he graduated from high school . He later studied Orthodox theology in Athens and Thessaloniki and later Catholic theology at the University of Strasbourg in France . In 1998 Kardamakis was ordained a deacon . He then carried out his first pastoral activities in Germany , where he was ordained a priest in 2002 . He then became a priest in the Greek Orthodox community in Karlsruhe . In 2004 Kardamakis became Vicar General of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan Region of France and only one year later, in 2005, became Deputy Secretary of the World Council of Churches in France.

On November 3rd, 2011 he was elected Metropolitan of Austria and Exarch of Hungary and Central Europe by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople . He was ordained bishop on November 30th and initiated into office on December 4th, 2011 in Vienna.

At the beginning of June 2014, Kardamakis received Austrian citizenship .

In addition to his native Greek , Arsenios Kardamakis is also fluent in English , French and German .
