Operation Atlantic Resolve

The Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR) is a 2014 begun and by the United States performed operation to support and reinforcement of NATO -Alliierten in Europe under the European Reassurance Initiative (ERI). It is intended to respond to the conflict in Ukraine and the intervention by Russia . It is not a NATO operation, but is carried out bilaterally by the USA as part of the European Reassurance Initiative.

Various exercises and training courses have been held in Estonia , Latvia , Lithuania , Poland , Romania and Bulgaria since 2014 in order to strengthen multinational cooperation in the security sector. According to the United States Department of Defense, the operation is intended to demonstrate continued commitment to NATO collective security and to lasting peace and stability in the region.

2015

Operation Dragoon Ride , a subsidiary of Atlantic Resolve, began on March 21, 2015 on NATO's eastern border in the Baltic States . After a maneuver, the 2nd Cavalry Regiment of the US Army was relocated overland to its home base in Vilseck (Bavaria). The convoy of various military equipment covered a distance of around 1,800 kilometers, including through Poland and the Czech Republic , and ended in Bavaria in early April 2015. Various military exercises were held on the route, which were agreed with the respective host countries. The extensive troop rotation was coordinated by the US Army in Europe .

The military column started in Estonia on March 22, 2015 . It consisted of armored vehicles from a Stryker unit of the US Army. First the column stopped in the Estonian cities of Türi and Pärnu . In marketplaces, the population was given the opportunity to view the military vehicles and talk to the soldiers.

2016

2016 twelve were temporarily ground attack aircraft of type Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II on the Air Force Base Ämari stationed in Estonia, as part of the Baltic Air Policing is occupied by interceptors NATO partners. In addition, twelve Lockheed Martin F-22 machines took part in exercises in Poland, Lithuania and Romania.

2017

[obsolete] As part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, a complete US combat brigade, the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) of the 4th US Infantry Division , ismovingfrom Fort Carson via Beaumont (Texas) , Bremerhaven and Poland to the northern part of NATO -East border moved. On January 6, 2017, the first transport ship with military equipment arrived in Bremerhaven. In addition to the freighter Resolve , the US freighters Freedom and Endurance from American Roll-on Roll-off Carrier (ARC) are also involved.

In total, there are 3,500 soldiers and 446 tracked vehicles, which will initially be relocated to Poland and from February 2017 will be distributed to the Baltic States, Bulgaria, Romania and the US base in Grafenwöhr in the Upper Palatinate. From February 2017, an additional 60 transport and combat helicopters together with 1,800 soldiers are expected in Illesheim , who are temporarily stationed in Latvia, Poland and Romania.

In parallel to Operation Atlantic Resolve, NATO is building four battalions with a total of 4,000 soldiers, including several hundred US soldiers, who will be stationed in Poland and the Baltic States. The NATO presence is also strengthened by a German battalion with up to 500 soldiers in Lithuania north of the so-called Suwalki gap .

The troop transfers in January 2017 were criticized by the left parliamentary group leader Sahra Wagenknecht , the AfD vice-chairman Alexander Gauland and Brandenburg's Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke ( SPD ); the CDU and parts of the Greens expressed their understanding.

2018

In May and June 2018, US troops crossed various federal states, particularly Brandenburg, as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve. They were relocated to NATO countries in Eastern and Central Europe.
