Carmen Camacho Velasquez (born August 7, 1913 in Bayambang , Pangasinan , † October 16, 1994 ) was a Filipino parasitologist who was best known for her discoveries of flukes in tropical fish.

Life

Carmen Velasquez received her Bachelor of Science from the University of the Philippines in 1934. In 1937 she graduated with a Master of Science from the University of Michigan . In 1957 she received her Ph.D. in Parasitology from the University of the Philippines. From 1958 to 1963 she was visiting professor at the University of Maryland . Velasquez discovered 32 species from 13 families and a new genus of Digenea in Filipino food fish, two species in birds and three species in mammals. In addition, she described three species from the class of hooked suction worms that parasitize on marine fish, as well as eight life cycles of Digenea and three of suction worms in the intestines of freshwater and marine fish. In 1963 she discovered in the gut of a Filipino man from Ilocos Sur , the Fadenwurmart Capillaria philippinensis that as the cause of capillariasis - parasitosis applies.

In addition to 92 scientific papers, “ Digenetic Trematodes of Philippine Fishes ” is Velasquez's best-known book.

Awards

Velasquez has received several awards for her achievements, including the Distinguished Service Medal and the Diploma of Honor of the Republic of the Philippines in 1965, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship from 1957 to 1958 and in 1963 the UP Alumni Association Professional Award in 1973, the National Science Development Board for outstanding publications in 1972 and 1973 and an award as an outstanding woman in the sciences of the Philippines at the 9th Unesco Biennial Conference in 1975. In 1983, Ferdinand Marcos made her national scientist of the Philippines .
