  • Cairo / Egypt : The former President of Egypt Mohammed Morsi is sentenced by an Egyptian court to a prison term of 20 years for inciting violence against demonstrators. The verdict is not yet legally binding. Critics consider it politically motivated.
  • Tokyo / Japan : With 603 km / h, the maglev scmaglev to a new high speed record. It is scheduled to run between the capital and central Japanese Nagoya from 2027 .

  • Puerto Montt / Chile : The Calbuco volcano erupts explosively and an ash cloud rises over 15 kilometers. A state of emergency is declared for the area in the Región de los Lagos and the first evacuation measures are initiated within a radius of 20 kilometers. The neighboring Argentina also imposed a state of emergency in the region near the border.
  • The Valley / Anguilla : In the general election, the Anguilla United Front wins six of the seven seats to be awarded. As the new head of government , Victor Banks takes office two days later.

  • Düsseldorf / Germany : The energy group E.ON announces the relocation of the company headquarters with the core divisions of renewable energy, networks and customer services to Essen . In addition, by the end of the year the company will be split up with the newly founded company Uniper for the electricity generation division (with the nuclear power plants and coal power plants) and energy trading and exploration based in Düsseldorf. E.ON will keep 40,000 employees and the new Uniper 15,000 employees.
  • Idlib / Syria : In the Syrian civil war , the al-Qaeda- owned al-Nusra front and with its allies conquered the strategically important Qarmeed military base in a former brick factory south of Idlib. The city of Jisr el-Shughur is also taken. At least 73 people are killed in attacks by the Syrian air force in the governorate.
