Garissa

Garissa is the capital of Garissa County in the East African state of Kenya . It is located in the area of the great plains of the Kenyan east on the Tana River , about 40 kilometers south of the equator . Until its dissolution, Garissa was the capital of the North-Eastern Province .

population

The city had 50,955 inhabitants at the last census (1999), but the number is now likely to be higher because Garissa - still a small town in the 1970s - is growing rapidly. For 2007 the population was estimated at 73,900. Main demographic group in Garissa are the Somali , mainly from the communities of Ogadeni- Darod .

Riots

On July 1, 2012, terrorist attacks were carried out on two Christian churches in Garissa, killing 17 people and injuring 40. The radical Muslim Al-Shabaab militia from Somalia is suspected to be the mastermind behind the attacks . Just a few days earlier, four foreign helpers had been kidnapped and their driver killed in the Dadaab refugee camp, 80 kilometers away . The entire region is considered unstable and dangerous.

Two people were killed and five seriously wounded as a result of an attack on November 5, 2011 with two hand grenades in the building complex of the East Africa Pentecostal Churches .

On February 7, 2013, strangers opened fire on Pastor Ibrahim Makunyi from the East Africa Pentecostal Churches (a Pentecostal Church ) and Abdi Welli. Welli, a local Christian convert from Islam, was killed instantly. He left his wife and three children. Pastor Makunyi was admitted to hospital seriously injured. Responsibility for the attack is seen in the region with Al-Shabab, a militant wing of the former Union of Islamic Courts .

On April 2, 2015, 147 people were killed in an attack on Garissa University College by Somali Al-Shabaab militia.
