Presidential election in Kazakhstan 2015

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential election in Kazakhstan took place on April 26, 2015. The winner of the early election, which according to the OSCE did not meet international standards, was the previous incumbent Nazarbayev, who won around 98 percent of all votes.

background

The next scheduled presidential election in Kazakhstan was originally scheduled for 2016, but has been brought forward by one year. Parliament had proposed the election in order to set “a sign of stability in times of a global economic crisis”. The country's economy had come under significant pressure from the effects of the war in Ukraine , the decline of the Russian ruble and the low price of crude oil, and a new election should ensure the greatest possible approval of the government's course.

Candidates

The application period for the election ended on March 15, 2015; at that time the electoral commission had received 16 applications for the presidency. Four of the applicants were refused to vote by the election commission because they had failed to submit all the necessary documents. Another six candidates were not allowed to vote because they did not appear for the compulsory language test. Mels Jeleussisow , Shaksibai Basilbajew and Muchamedrachim Kursabajew withdrew their applications of their own accord.

The electoral commission of Kazakhstan announced on March 25, 2015 the candidates who had been admitted to the election. The three candidates who will take part in the presidential election are the current incumbent Nursultan Nazarbayev , who was nominated by his party Nur Otan , as well as Turghyn Sysdyqow of the Communist People's Party and the independent candidate Äbilghasy Qussayynov , who are largely unknown in Kazakhstan.
