Presidential election in Kazakhstan 2005

The presidential election in Kazakhstan took place on December 4, 2005. It was the third election of the Kazakh president since the country gained independence. From this election the previous incumbent Nursultan Nazarbayev emerged as the winner.

Candidates

Five candidates were accepted for election by the election commission. They were the previous incumbent Nursultan Nazarbayev ( Otan ), Sharmachan Tujaqbai (Alliance “For a Just Kazakhstan”), Älichan Bäimenow ( Democratic Party Ak Shol ), Jerassyl Äbylqassymow ( Communist People's Party of Kazakhstan ) and Mels Jeleussisow (independent). Originally, a total of 18 candidates had applied for admission to the election, four of them using the compulsory Kazakh- Failed the language test and a candidate did not take it. Two candidates withdrew their candidacy before the registration deadline had expired and six candidates were refused entry by the electoral commission because they had not received the necessary signatures for admission.
