The Dharahara Tower ( Nepali धरहरा ), also Bhimsen Tower , was a nine-story, 61.88 meter high tower in the center of Sundhara in Kathmandu . It was built in 1832 under Bhimsen Thapa , Prime Minister of Nepal, for the Queen of Nepal and originally served as a military watchtower. Later it was used as a touristic viewing platform, which could be reached via a long spiral staircase inside. In a severe earthquake of magnitude 8.3 on January 15, 1934 with around 16,000 deaths in Nepal and India, the tower was destroyed for the first time and then rebuilt true to the original.

In the earthquake on April 25, 2015 with a magnitude of 7.8 M W , it collapsed for the second time. About 60 dead were recovered from the rubble of the tower.
