  • Jerusalem / Israel : Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismisses ministers from two liberal parties and calls for new elections to be held on March 17th the following day. The background to this is a dispute in the government coalition over the draft budget and thus the question of whether the defense or social budget should be increased.
  • Mandera / Kenya : At least 36 non-Muslims are killed in an attack on workers in a quarry in northeastern Kenya near the Somali border. The attack bears the signature of the Islamist Shaabab terrorist militia.
  • Sofia / Bulgaria : The planned South Stream natural gas pipeline will be stopped.
  • Vatican City : Pope Francis and representatives of the world religions sign a resolution for the abolition of worldwide slavery. The aim is to end human trafficking and slavery by 2020.

  • Grozny / Russia : Ten police officers and nine rebels die in an attack by rebels on Grozny, the capital of the Russian autonomous republic of Chechnya . A school and a media building are badly damaged.
  • Malé / Maldives : A cable fire in the only Maldivian seawater desalination plant interrupts the drinking water supply. A state of emergency is declared on the island of Malé . In the following days, India and China begin deliveries of water.

  • Roseau / Dominica : The parliamentary elections are won by the ruling Labor party , which can win 15 seats. The remaining six seats go to the United Workers' Party (UWP).

  • Pristina / Kosovo : After the agreement of the two largest parties on the opposition politician Isa Mustafa as the new Prime Minister, the Mustafa government is elected and sworn in in the parliament of Pristina . This ends a month-long political stalemate that had come about through the renewed victory of the party of the previous Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi in the parliamentary elections and the stance of the other parties to prevent it.

  • New Delhi / India : During a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Indian capital , the two states agree new supply agreements for Russian exports of gas, oil and nuclear technology, the expansion of ailing Indian infrastructure and cooperation in the air - and space travel.

  • Tashkent / Uzbekistan : President Islom Karimov's Liberal Democratic Party can maintain its supremacy in the parliamentary elections . Only parties that support the president's course have been allowed to vote, since opposition parties such as Birlik (unity) or Erg (freedom) are refused registration. The turnout is 89%.
  • Tunis / Tunisia : The long-time government politician Beji Caid Essebsi wins the runoff election for the office of president with over 55% of the vote against the current interim president Moncef Marzouki .

  • Managua / Nicaragua : President Ortega gives the go-ahead for construction work on the Nicaragua Canal . Investors from the People's Republic of China , who received the concession without a tender, want to build highways, two ports, an artificial lake, a free trade zone, a tourism complex and a steel and concrete company in addition to the interoceanic waterway. In addition, China receives licenses to mine the raw materials. Thousands of farmers protest against the canal because they fear the destruction of their livelihoods. Environmentalists, opposition and citizens' groups criticize numerous violations of environmental regulations. The entire ecosystem is threatened if the drinking water of Lake Nicaragua , through which the canal runs, is polluted.

  • Kousséri / Cameroon : The Cameroonian army stops a massive attack by the Islamist terrorist militia Boko Haram with air strikes. This has temporarily occupied the Achigachia military base in the far north of the country on the border with Nigeria .
  • Ravenna / Italy : Not far from the port, in bad weather, the Turkish freighter Gökbel collides with the freighter Lady Aziz sailing under the flag of Belize . The Gökbel sinks, two of the eleven crew members die, four more are missing.
  • Surabaya / Indonesia : The AirAsia aircraft with the flight number QZ8501 disappears from the radar on its way from Surabaya to Singapore 42 minutes after take-off in a thunderstorm area and is temporarily lost. There are 162 people on board. Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore use naval ships, airplanes, helicopters and destroyers to search for debris in the Java Sea , where two days later the wreckage of the machine is discovered and the first corpses are recovered.
  • Vlora / Albania : The outbreak of a fire on board the Norman Atlantic ferry on the way from Patras in Greece to Ancona in Italy near Albania kills at least ten. Dozens of passengers are still missing. When trying to salvage the wrecked ship, two Albanian seamen are killed the following day.
  • Zagreb / Croatia : In the presidential elections the incumbent Ivo Josipović got 38.5% of the vote, his challenger, the former Foreign Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović got 37%. This means that a run-off election will be necessary, which is to take place on January 11, 2015.

  • Athens / Greece : The third round of the election to the Greek President in 2014 , the candidate of the ruling coalition, the former missed EU - Commissioner Stavros Dimas , again and finally the majority in Parliament.
