  • Conakry / Guinea : After panic buying and price increases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone , the UN fears a food crisis caused by Ebola . Shortages of harvest workers due to travel restrictions as a result of quarantine measures threaten losses, especially in the maize and rice harvest . The suspension of flight connections makes the exchange of medical personnel and the delivery of relief supplies difficult. 1552 infected people in West Africa did not survive the Ebola virus.
  • Iqaluit / Canada : The founding meeting of the Arctic Economic Council takes place in Iqaluit, the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut . This is intended to promote economic development in the Arctic. Critics express concern that the climatically sensitive region will be developed too quickly economically.
  • Yakutsk / Russia : Russia begins building a gas pipeline to China in the Sakha republic . In addition to gas deliveries to the neighboring country, the Far East should also be better supplied with energy in the future.
  • Sanaa / Yemen : After protests and sieges of the capital by Shiite Houthi rebels, the Yemeni President Hadi dismissed the cabinet and reversed austerity measures. He is now striving for a government of national unity, while the Houthi rebels fight for more independence from the Sunni-influenced Yemen.
  • Vojany / Slovakia : In Slovakia, a new gas pipeline has been opened between the cities of Vojany and Uschhorod in the Ukraine . This means that Ukraine can obtain over 20% of its annual natural gas requirements from the European Union . Originally, an existing gas pipeline was to be expanded and a Slovak thermal power plant supplied with Russian gas.

  • Frankfurt am Main / Germany : Under pressure from its President Mario Draghi , the European Central Bank decides to buy up corporate loans from private banks and credit institutions for which taxpayers in the EU are proportionally liable. At the same time, the key interest rate will be reduced to 0.05 percent.
  • Newport / United Kingdom : At the NATO summit it is decided not to implement any military intervention in Ukraine by NATO. In addition, Ukraine's membership in NATO is refused. In contrast, NATO wants to help modernize the Ukrainian military, and some NATO member states will deliver weapons to Ukraine.

  • Chongqing / China : After a week of continuous rain with floods and landslides, 44 victims are to be mourned in the Chinese provinces of Sichuan and Guizhou as well as in Chongqing. Many buildings are badly damaged, and agriculture is badly affected. It is feared that 120,000 people have lost their homes.
  • Freetown / Sierra Leone : The government is imposing a curfew for several days in order to get the increasingly raging Ebola infection under control. 21,000 people are hired to enforce this curfew. In the three countries of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea , 2,097 people out of 3,700 people had died (at the end of August). The Ebola epidemic also has economic effects: the states concerned are becoming more and more isolated, passenger traffic is restricted and tourism comes to a standstill.
  • Srinagar / India : In the Kashmir and Punjab regions of India and Pakistan, more than 200 people perished as a result of floods and landslides during heavy monsoons .
  • Venice / Italy : The film A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence by the Swedish director Roy Andersson receives the Golden Lion award at the 71st Venice International Film Festival .

  • Baghdad / Iraq : In Iraq, the new government under Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has been sworn in. The most important task is the fight against the terror militias of the Islamic State in the north and west of the country.
  • Brussels / Belgium : The European Union decides on further economic sanctions against Russia . In addition to access to the EU financial markets for Russian financial institutions and banks (applies to all banks with a state share of at least 50 percent), the sanctions also affect state-controlled oil companies such as Rosneft , Transneft and Gazprom Neft . The EU also prohibits the export of special technology for oil production and prohibits the delivery of arms.
  • Kabul / Afghanistan : Two days before the results of the runoff election for the office of President on June 14th were announced, the attempt to form a government of national unity between the two leading candidates failed despite international mediation. Abdullah Abdullah , who won the first round, declares that he will not recognize the election result and calls for protests against the election result. According to a preliminary result of the runoff election, opposing candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadsai has a lead of around one million votes.
  • Phoenix / United States : Rainfall of 80 liters per square meter leads to severe flooding in the desert city of Phoenix.   • Bremen / Germany : A waste disposal company explodes in Ritterhude near Bremen. There are several injuries and considerable property damage, several residential buildings in the area are in danger of collapsing.
  • Cupertino / United States : Tim Cook introduces the Apple Watch .
  • London / United Kingdom : The media reported that the London serial killer Jack the Ripper was identified as Aaron Kosminski 126 years after he was killed by a scarf left behind .
  • Sanaa / Yemen : Demonstrations by the Houthi rebels escalate in the Jeminite capital. Soldiers are said to have fired live ammunition when gunmen attacked government buildings. At least seven people were killed.

  • Barcelona / Spain : In Catalonia , hundreds of thousands demonstrate for independence from Spain on the 300th regional national holiday. A referendum is scheduled to take place on November 9th, and the Spanish government will declare it illegal and reject it.
  • Ottawa / Canada : Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper announces the discovery of one of the ships of the Franklin expedition, which ended fatally in the mid-19th century .
  • Washington, DC / United States : US President Barack Obama announces further sanctions against the Russian Federation , which will come into force at the same time as those of the EU . They affect the financial, energy and armaments sectors, while the EU sanctions are primarily directed against oil companies. The background to this is the destabilization of Ukraine operated by Russia and the presence of heavily armed Russian troops in the eastern part of this country.
