Frank Bainimarama (2014)

Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama (born April 27, 1954 ), better known as Frank Bainimarama , is the military chief and since January 5, 2007 the head of government of Fiji .

Bainimarama took power in Fiji twice by military means. First in 2000 in response to a previous coup led by George Speight . From May 29 to July 13, 2000 he was the head of an interim military government before handing power to Josefa Iloilo . In December 2006, he organized another military coup because, in his opinion, the government was too lax with the 2000 coup plotters. In 2014 he became the democratically elected Prime Minister.

Life

After attending Marist Brothers High School, Bainimarama enlisted on July 26, 1976 in the Fijian Navy . He received his first command in 1982 when he became the captain of HMFS Kikau. After being promoted to Lieutenant Commander in 1986, he was posted to Sinai for 18 months, where he was part of the Fijian part of the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO). In April 1988 he became the Commander in Chief of the Navy with the rank of Commander. Since March 1, 1999 he has been a commodore and commander of the military in Fiji.

2000 coup

After the coup by George Speight, Bainimarama took power to restore order. The military rule lasted from May 29 to July 13, 2000.

2006 coup

On December 5, 2006 (Fiji time = GMT + 12), Bainimarama announced the takeover of power by the armed forces and ordered heavily armed soldiers to march in front of the prime minister's house and put several ministers under house arrest. He cites the persistent corruption of the Qarase government as the reason, despite numerous warnings. These are "much larger illegal activities" than the thoroughly illegal coup. Democracy is good for the people, but it should not be used to hide corruption. The military installed Jona Senilagakali as transitional prime minister .

On January 4, 2007, the military returned power to President Ratu Josefa Iloilo . In a speech, Iloilo approved the action of the military and swore in Bainimarama on January 5, 2007 as head of government of the transitional government.

The coup and government reshuffle were upheld by the High Court on October 9, 2008, but declared unconstitutional by the Court of Appeal on April 9, 2009.

Democratically elected Prime Minister

In 2013 a new constitution came into force; the first democratic elections after the coup were scheduled for 2014. Bainimarama then founded the FijiFirst party . In the parliamentary elections on September 17, 2014, this won an absolute majority with 32 out of 50 seats. Bainimarama was sworn in as Prime Minister on September 22nd.

In the parliamentary elections in November 2018 , his party was able to defend its absolute majority with 50.02% of the vote and 27 out of 51 seats. Bainimarama was sworn in again as Prime Minister on November 19, 2018.
