Ratu Josefa Iloilo Uluivuda MBE (born December 29, 1920 - † February 6, 2011 ) was the President of Fiji from 2000 to 2009 . He carried the traditional title Tui Vuda of the chief of the Vuda district in western Fiji.

Career

He was Vice-President under Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara when the government of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry was overthrown by a nationalist coup led by George Speight on May 29, 2000. After the hostage drama ended in July, he was named president.

At first he was seen only as a stooge of the military , but in the meantime he had earned the respect of the various political factions and ethnic groups by always trying to find a compromise that was acceptable to all. He also refused to intervene directly in the clashes between politicians and was even able to reach disaffected factions such as the Indo-Fijian community. He is admired for having persuaded the military, in 2001 the democracy to have come back.

Iloilo was the lay preacher of the Methodist Church in Fiji and Rotuma and was its vice-president in 1997 and 1998.

Ratu Josefa Iloilo was overthrown in a military coup on December 5, 2006. On January 3, 2007, the military returned power to the president. Ratu Josefa Iloilo then installed the military chief Frank Bainimarama as head of a transitional government. On April 10, 2009, he suspended the constitution and dismissed all judges. Previously, an appeals court ruled the 2006 government illegal. In August 2009 he resigned as president.
