- Brussels / Belgium : Former Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg takes over the post of Secretary General of NATO as the successor to Dane Anders Fogh Rasmussen .
- Nuuk / Greenland : Prime Minister Aleqa Hammond ( Siumut ) resigns from this office and as party leader after it is revealed that she incorrectly calculated the equivalent of around € 14,000 from budget funds and initially did not reimburse it. Parliament approves new elections on November 28th. Kim Kielsen will succeed him as Prime Minister .

- Riga / Latvia : The parliamentary elections in Latvia are won by the previously ruling conservative-liberal ruling party Vienotība from Latvia's Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma .

- Brasília / Brazil : The presidential election in Brazil and the parliamentary election in Brazil are taking place. Since none of the candidates for the office of president achieved an absolute majority, there will be a runoff election on October 26th between incumbent Dilma Rousseff and the leading candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Aécio Neves . The previous environment minister, Marina Silva , was eliminated as third place. There are more conservative and right-wing MPs in the new parliament.
- Istanbul / Turkey : The women’s national basketball team of the United States wins the World Cup with a 77-64 final victory over Spain .
- Sofia / Bulgaria : The early parliamentary elections in Bulgaria are won by the conservative GERB party. On the other hand, the GERB lacks an absolute majority.
- Vatican City : The extraordinary Synod of Bishops on the pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization begins in the Vatican .

- Madrid / Spain : In the course of the Ebola fever epidemic , which has so far claimed around 3,900 lives, the first case of an infection in Spain and thus outside of West Africa is known.

- Sanaa / Yemen : More than 40 people died in a suicide attack in Sanaa. In the following days the number of victims increased to over 50.
- Stockholm / Sweden : The French Patrick Modiano receives the Nobel Prize for Literature this year . One of his most famous works is In the Café of Lost Youth .

- Berlin / Germany : While the German government is sticking to the meeting of the Petersburg Dialogue in Sochi , various German organizations and foundations have canceled the next meeting in Sochi in a letter. The letter was signed by executives from the Heinrich Böll Foundation , the German-Russian Exchange , the European Exchange , Greenpeace Germany and Amnesty International .
- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The American Jaron Lanier , pioneer in the field of virtual reality , receives the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade .
- La Paz / Bolivia : The presidential election in Bolivia and the parliamentary election in Bolivia are taking place.
- Milan / Italy : The USA won the final game of the 2014 Women's Volleyball World Cup and thus the world title for the first time.
- Motegi / Japan : The Spaniard Marc Márquez wins the 2014 FIM Motorcycle World Championship early , thus defending his title. He is the youngest driver to have done this in this class.
- Sarajevo / Bosnia and Herzegovina : The parliamentary elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina are taking place.

- Stockholm / Sweden : The Frenchman Jean Tirole will receive the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics this year "for his analysis of the power and regulation of the markets" .
- Vatican City : For the first time in its history, the Vatican not only recognizes homosexual people per se and their sexual orientation in the document "Relatio post disceptationem" , but also theologically and ethically accepts their partnership with another homosexual person. Furthermore, the Vatican refuses to recognize this couple bond as being equivalent to marriage or as marriage.

The share of renewable energies in the energy mix (electricity, heating, transport) in the EU should be "at least 27 percent" in 2030. The EU is committed to reducing its carbon dioxide emissions by at least 40 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030 .
- Kayes / Mali : Mali's first Ebola patient dies. The day before, the child from Guinea brought the disease to Mali. In total, more than 4,900 people have fallen victim to the Ebola epidemic in West Africa.
- Roswell / United States : Google manager Alan Eustace dares to jump into the stratosphere from a height of 41,419 m, breaking Felix Baumgartner's record in 2012.

- Brasília / Brazil : In the runoff election for the presidential office, incumbent Dilma Rousseff beats challenger Aécio Neves with almost 52% .
- Chișinău / Moldova : The Russian government is tightening its sanctions against Moldova. The already existing import ban on Moldovan wines will be extended to meat and meat products. Observers see this as a political punishment because Moldova is getting closer to the EU . The latter has liberalized its markets for Moldovan wine in order to support the winegrowers. Wine from the autonomous region of Gagauzia , on the other hand, can be exported directly to Russia.
- Kiev / Ukraine : In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine , Prime Minister Arsenij Yazenjuk's pro-European Popular Front becomes the strongest force with over 22% of the vote. Close behind with almost 22% is the also pro-European bloc Petro Poroshenko of the incumbent president. Prime Minister Yatsenyuk also invites three other parties to exploratory talks. The pro-Russian opposition bloc received almost 10% of the vote. The pro-Russian-oriented communists , who for the first time ever fail to pass the five percent hurdle , have missed entry to parliament .
- Montevideo / Uruguay : In the presidential and parliamentary elections in Uruguay , none of the candidates for the office of president achieved a majority in the first round. This means that there will probably be a runoff election on November 30th in which the socialist Tabaré Vázquez , candidate of the left-wing government coalition, will run against the conservative Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou .
- Tunis / Tunisia : The parliamentary elections in Tunisia are won by the secular Nidaa Tounes party , which can secure 85 of the 217 seats. The Islamist Ennahda party received 69 seats in parliament.
