Al Jazeera America was an English-language news channel that began broadcasting on August 20, 2013. It was headquartered in New York , with 12 subsidiary offices in Washington, DC , Chicago , Detroit , Nashville , Los Angeles and San Francisco, among others . He took over the broadcasting slots and frequencies from Current TV; a television station that Al Jazeera took over in early 2013. Due to low viewership, Al Jazeera America stopped broadcasting on April 12, 2016.

Al Jazeera America should broadcast 24 hours, mostly news and posts on current topics. In contrast to its international sister station Al Jazeera English , Al Jazeera America should primarily deal with topics that are interesting and relevant to US Americans.

In April 2014, the station stopped its sports news and switched the previously daily interactive program, The Stream, to a weekly broadcasting rhythm. Al Jazeera America had only very low ratings.

The channel guide compiled in summer 2013 consists mainly of Americans who have relevant experience from major broadcasters. AJAM is headed by Kate O'Brian, who previously worked for ABC News for over 30 years , most recently as Assistant Broadcasting Director. Three former senior editors from CNN , CBS News and MSNBC were named as deputies in July 2013 . Current TV took on around 200 employees, around a quarter of the workforce planned for the start of broadcasting.

In April 2014, the station left between 60 and 100 employees, the majority of whom had temporary contracts, according to the managing director. The broadcaster pointed out that it was a restructuring measure, that over 800 people were still employed and that many new programs were in the development phase.

There will be no livestream available on the broadcaster's website after the broadcast has started. However, Al Jazeera America should also be available on Al Jazeera America's YouTube channel . The broadcaster will publish its programs and short messages on YouTube, where they can be viewed for free.
