Aécio Neves (2014)

Aécio Neves da Cunha (born March 10, 1960 in Belo Horizonte ) is a Brazilian economist and president of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) party. Neves was the seventeenth governor of the state of Minas Gerais between January 1, 2003 and March 31, 2010 and is currently Senator of the Federal Senate in the Upper House of the National Congress of Brazil . He ran as his party's candidate in the 2014 presidential election .

Career

He comes from a "family of political tradition in Brazil". He is the grandson and was the personal private secretary of Tancredo Neves (1910–1985), one of the most prominent and popular politicians in Brazil, who died as the elected president before he took office. Growing up in Belo Horizonte, Aécio accompanied his parents to Rio de Janeiro when he was ten . After studying economics at the Catholic University of Minas Gerais , he began his political career in Brasília at the age of 23 with the first of four seats as a congressman for the state of Minas Gerais until 2002. Until 1989 he was a member of the Partido Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) . Neves was President of the Chamber of Deputies from 2001 to 2002 and leader of the PSDB, which he joined in March 1989.

Presidential candidate

In the first ballot for the presidential election on October 5, 2014, Neves received 33.6% of the vote, surprisingly well ahead of Marina Silva . With that he reached a runoff election against the incumbent President Dilma Rousseff . The fact that Neves, as governor, had a publicly funded airfield built on his uncle's property was polemicized by his opponents during the election campaign. In the runoff election on October 26, 2014, he lost 48.4% of the vote against 51.6% for the re-elected Rousseff.

Private life

Aécio Neves is married to Letícia Weber from Rio Grande do Sul for the second time and has two daughters. Another daughter comes from a first marriage.
