The 2014 elections in Brazil took place on October 5, 2014, the necessary run-off elections for the presidency and governor's posts were held three weeks later on October 26. The voters were with elective called the president, one-third of the Senate, the House of Representatives, as well as the governors and the deputies houses of the states to redefine. The election of the president , in which the incumbent Dilma Rousseff ( PT ) ran again, received the most international attention . She reached the runoff against Aécio Neves ( PSDB ) in the first ballot and emerged from the runoff as the winner. Almost 143 million eligible voters were called to the elections.

Presidential election

The president is elected by all Brazilian voters for a four-year term. Whoever has an absolute majority of the valid votes is elected. The new President's term of office began on January 1, 2015.

Candidates

Dilma Rousseff ran again as a candidate for the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) to hold a second term in office, which is possible under the constitution . Michel Temer of the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) took up the post of Vice President .

Aécio Neves ran for the largest opposition party, Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB), and Aloysio Nunes (PSDB) was the candidate for the vice-presidency .

The candidate Eduardo Campos of the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) had an accident with a Cessna 560XL during the election campaign on August 13, 2014 and was killed along with the six other inmates. After the accidental death of Campos, Marina Silva ran for the PSB in his place. Silva was originally a candidate for the vice-presidency in the election. Beto Albuquerque (PSB) took this position .

There were also candidates for other, smaller political groups, but they were given little chance of winning the election.

Election result

First ballot

Rousseff received 41.6% of the vote, Neves 33.6% and Silva 21.3%.

Runoff

In the runoff election on October 26, Rousseff prevailed with around 51.6 percent of the valid votes and a lead of around 3.5 million votes against Neves. The turnout was 78.9%.

In the election of the Senate ( Senado Federal ), 27 of the total of 81 members were to be newly determined, they have a term of eight years. The remaining 54 members were elected in 2010 and will remain in office until 2019 (after the 2018 election ). One representative was to be elected in each of the 26 states and in the Federal District. Each voter had one vote; the candidate with the most votes was elected.

The 513 members of the Chamber of Deputies ( Câmara dos Deputados ) were elected in separate numbers in the states and the Distrito Federal . The number of representatives to be elected in the individual states depends on the size of the population, although small states are overrepresented and large states are underrepresented.
