Eduardo Campos (2006)

Eduardo Henrique Accioly Campos (born August 10, 1965 in Recife , † August 13, 2014 in Santos ) was a Brazilian economist, politician and candidate for the 2014 presidential election . He was also president of the Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB) .

Life

Campos, son of the writer Maximiano Campos and the politician Ana Arraes , studied economics at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE) and began his political career in the state of Pernambuco . He was head of cabinet of his grandfather Miguel Arraes and then held other offices in the state government. He later became a member of the Partido Socialista Brasileiro. From 2004 to 2005, Campos was Minister of Science and Technology in Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's cabinet . From 2007 to April 2014 he was, like his grandfather, governor of the state of Pernambuco. In spring 2014, he announced his candidacy in the presidential election in October of the same year.

He married the economist Renata de Andrade Lima Campos, with whom he had five children. The youngest son was diagnosed with Down syndrome .

Political career

Minister of Science and Technology

In 2004, Campos became the country's youngest minister by then President Lula da Silva, taking over the science and technology departments. Under Campos, the biosecurity program was adopted, which allowed the use of embryonic stem cells for scientific and transgenetic purposes. Another outstanding achievement was the introduction of the “Mathematics Olympics” in Brazilian public schools.

Governor of Pernambuco (2007-2014)

An outstanding achievement during his reign as governor of Pernambuco was the impetus for infrastructural improvements. Such projects include the expansion of the railway network of Ferrovia Transnordestina , the construction of oil refinery in the city Abreu e Lima , the construction of the production and processing center for blood derivatives Hemobrás and the construction of the federal highway BR-101 .

Extension opening at Recife Oncology Hospital

The socialist published all household figures on the Internet. Due to the exemplary economic efficiency of the state of Pernambuco, it was chosen in a ranking of all 27 states by the non-governmental organization Transparência Brasil in second place. In 2009, Pernambuco was able to achieve above-average growth of 3.5%. The investment volume rose in the same year from 600,000 million to over 2.4 billion reais.

With the new security program Pacto pela Vida , the murder rate fell by 39.10%. Robbery and theft also fell by over 30% between 2007 and 2013. In the first months of 2014, however, the murder rate rose significantly again, contrary to the once positive trend.

In addition, three new hospitals were built in the greater Recife metropolitan area and 14 outpatient clinics for first aid . Not least as a result of this, Pernambuco recorded the fastest growing life expectancy between 2006 and 2013 (plus 3.72 years). Child mortality was reduced by 47.5%. This trend was mainly due to the new gynecological and pediatric hospital, which cares for expectant mothers and newborns from the vicinity of the city of Caruaru and from Greater Recife.

The significant economic growth in Pernambuco created around 560,000 jobs subject to social insurance between 2007 and 2013. Companies such as Sadia ( Vitória de Santo Antão ), Perdigão ( Bom Conselho ), Novartis ( Goiana ), Kraft Foods (Vitória de Santo Antão) and Fiat Chrysler (Goiana) settled in the state during this period.

Break with the Dilma Rousseff government

After the unrest in 2013 during the FIFA Confederations Cup , the PSB, under Campo's leadership, left the government alliance headed by President Dilma Rousseff . All trust offices have been returned across the government level. One of the main arguments in favor of the break was that, in the view of the PSB, the government and traditional parties such as the PMDB were too closely linked . The party then invited Marina Silva and her allied parties to form the new government from 2015 together with Campos as president. This new party alliance is called "New Politics". The break was not achieved by the unanimous consensus of the party, which led to the secession of its part of the state of Ceará , which was loyal to the government . The leading voice of the split, Ciro Gomes , described Campos as a free rider who would carry on his grandfather's legacy in colonial fashion. Under Campos he foresaw the downfall of the party.

In July 2014, Campos criticized the fact that projects such as the diversion of the Rio São Francisco and the expansion of the railway in the north-east by President Dilma were in danger of being forgotten again.

Clarification of the circumstances of death

On August 13, 2014, Campos was in the course of his presidential election campaign, coming from Rio de Janeiro , in the city of Guarujá in the state of São Paulo when his plane, a Cessna 560XL, crashed for reasons that are not yet clear. The accident occurred during poor weather and visibility conditions after an aborted approach to the military airport in the city of Santos . During the preparations for the second attempt to land, the plane crashed into a residential area in the Boqueirão district. All seven inmates were killed. Six Boqueirão residents were slightly injured. The victims could only be identified through a DNA analysis.

The black box recovered from the aircraft wreck did not contain any information about the crash. As experts from the Luftwaffe FAB announced, the audio recording of the flight recorder came from a previous crash, but not from the crash. Reports from eyewitnesses that the plane crashed in flames could be refuted by the recordings of a webcam, which appeared a few days later, on which the crashing machine could be clearly identified as the Eduardo Campos.

On August 17, 2014 , a funeral service was held in Recife in front of the seat of government of the Governor of Pernambuco, the Palácio do Campo das Princesas , under the direction of the Archbishop of Recife and Olinda, Dom Antônio Fernando Saburido. Campos was buried in the family tomb next to his grandfather Miguel Arraes in the Santo Amaro cemetery in Recife. The grandfather also died on August 13th (2005).
