The 2014 Pacific hurricane season officially began on May 15 in the Eastern Pacific and June 1 in the Central Pacific. It ended on November 30th. Most tropical storms usually form during this period, as the conditions for hurricanes to form are good , the ocean is warm enough, the humidity is high and there is hardly any wind shear , but a tropical storm could form at any time. All storms north of the equator and east of 180 ° W are included. The storms that form west of 180 ° W are called typhoons and are part of the 2014 Pacific typhoon season .

The season got off to a quick start with the formation of Tropical Storm Amanda on May 22, a week after the official start of hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific. The storm reached wind speeds of around 250 km / h three days later, making it the strongest hurricane ever observed in the Eastern Pacific in May. Four days after the dissolution of Amanda, the next tropical low pressure area formed directly off the coasts of Chiapas and Guatemala , which was updated to tropical storm Boris a little later. The storm landed near Tonalá , Chiapas on June 4, causing flooding in southern Mexico and Guatemala, killing at least six people. The ensuing Hurricane Cristina formed on June 9 and became the earliest second major hurricane in a season in the Eastern Pacific three days later. After two weeks of calm following the breakup of Cristina, the two weak tropical storms Douglas and Elida formed at the end of June. Another weak system formed with the tropical storm Fausto on July 7th.

Duration May 22nd - May 29th
intensity 135 kn (250 km / h ) (1 minute) , 932 hPa

Storm course

On May 19, an area of disturbed weather formed several hundred miles south-southwest of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec . Over the course of the following day, the system could not intensify significantly and remained relatively disorganized. On the morning of May 22nd, the disruption was initially given a medium probability, and a few hours later a high probability of developing into a tropical depression. On the evening of the same day the National Hurricane Center reported that the first tropical low pressure area of the season had formed about 1020 km south-southwest of Manzanillo , Colima and was given the designation One-E . Over the next day, the depression began to build up circulation and attained the status of a tropical storm, which was named Amanda . The storm intensified rapidly and was upgraded to a hurricane by noon on May 24th. Twelve hours later, the National Hurricane Center updated Amanda to a major category 3 hurricane. On the morning of May 25, the hurricane reached the second highest category 4. Six hours later, Amanda had sustained winds of 250 km / h, individual peak gusts of 305 km / h and a minimum air pressure of 932 hPa reached its peak. After that, the hurricane slowly began to weaken, so that it was only a weak Category 4 hurricane over the course of May 26th. That evening, Amanda continued her weakening and was downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane by the National Hurricane Center. In the early morning of May 27th, Amanda was only a Category 2 hurricane, but a few hours later it intensified into a major hurricane. However, the storm weakened into a Category 2 hurricane again that evening. On the night of May 28, the National Hurricane Center downgraded Amanda to a strong tropical storm as it weakened rapidly. Moving northeast, Amanda continued to weaken and was only a moderate tropical storm by the late afternoon of the same day, which was downgraded to a tropical depression on May 29th. A little later, the system degenerated to an extra-tropical residual low when it was about 750 km south of Cabo San Lucas , Baja California Sur .

When Amanda showed sustained wind speeds of 250 km / h and an air pressure of 932 hPa on the afternoon of May 25, the hurricane broke the record for the strongest maize storm ever recorded in the Eastern Pacific. Previously, only Hurricane Adolph, which had its peak with wind speeds of 230 km / h and an air pressure of 940 hPa on May 29, 2001, reached category 4 that month.

Effects

At least three people died in Mexico as a result of the storm . The state of Michoacan experienced heavy rains that caused flooding. Roads and cars were badly damaged.

Storm course

On May 30, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began monitoring an area of disturbed weather that has formed several hundred miles south of southeastern Mexico . During the day, the system remained stationary and organized itself so that it had a medium probability of developing into a tropical depression. The disorder moved very slowly the next day, but it could still get worse, making it a high probability. Two days later, on June 2nd, the National Hurricane Center realized that the system had reached the strength of a tropical depression, which is why it was named Two-E . At that time it was located about 365 km south-southeast of Salina Cruz , Oaxaca . Six hours later, a storm warning was issued that ran from Salina Cruz to the Mexican-Guatemalan border. On the morning of June 3, the system began to take a north course and on the same day intensified into the second tropical storm of the season, which was named Boris . On the night of June 4, the storm approached the coast and went ashore near Tonalá , Chiapas in the early morning . A few hours after going ashore, Boris weakened into a tropical depression. In the evening hours of the same day, the system broke up about 130 km east-northeast of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.

Effects

In Guatemala , heavy rains triggered a landslide that killed at least five people. Three other people were also injured. Several houses were damaged or destroyed.

Storm course

On the morning of June 7th, several hundred miles south of Acapulco , Guerrero, a wide area of low pressure formed. During the day, the system slowly moved west and was able to organize itself somewhat so that it had a medium probability of developing into a tropical depression. It headed northwest during the following day and approached the coast on June 9th. On the evening of the same day, the National Hurricane Center classified the fault as tropical depression Drei-E , which at that time was about 260 km south of Zihuatanejo , Guerrero . Just six hours later, the system intensified into a tropical storm that was named Cristina . On the evening of June 10, the system reached the strength of a moderate tropical storm and intensified into a Category 1 hurricane on June 11, simultaneously moving west. On the night of the next day, Cristina took a course west-northwest and intensified into a Category 2 hurricane. A few hours later, on the morning of June 12, the National Hurricane Center upgraded the storm to a major Category 3 hurricane as it began to intensify rapidly. Cristina reached the second highest category 4 during the day, making it the second hurricane of this category in the Eastern Pacific this season. Three hours later the system reached its peak with sustained wind speeds of 240 km / h and an air pressure of 935 hPa. After that, however, Cristina weakened and was downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane on the night of June 13. During the day, the storm continued to weaken and was downgraded to Category 2. Following a northwest course, Cristina approached Socorro and was downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane on the evening of June 13th. After the hurricane hit the island, it weakened into a strong tropical storm on June 14th. Cristina continued its rapid weakening and was downgraded to a weak tropical storm in the early morning of June 15. During the day, the system was just a tropical low pressure area, which degenerated into an extra-tropical residual low about 490 km west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas , Baja California Sur in the evening and the National Hurricane Center issued the last warning.

Tropical Storm Douglas

intensity 45 kn (85 km / h ) (1 minute) , 999 hPa

Storm course

On June 25, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) began observing an area of showers and thunderstorms off the coast of southern Mexico and Central America . It moved in a northwest direction during the day, intensified, and on June 27 was several hundred miles south-southwest of Acapulco , Guerrero . Early the next day, it got a high chance of developing into a tropical system. On the evening of June 28, the National Hurricane Center classified the fault as tropical depression Vier-E when it was analyzed about 525 km south-southwest of Manzanillo , Colima . In the course of the following day the system moved in a west-northwest direction, but could not organize itself significantly. On the night of June 30th, the low pressure area reached the strength of a weak tropical storm, which is why the National Hurricane Center named it Douglas . The storm intensified a little during the day and moved in a northwest direction. Douglas maintained its intensity on July 1st and moved to slightly cooler waters. The next day the storm began to move more slowly and weakened little by the evening of the same day. The National Hurricane Center downgraded Douglas to a tropical depression on July 3. Twelve hours later, however, the system was able to re-intensify itself in a tropical storm. On July 5, Douglas weakened again to a tropical depression and degenerated to an extra-tropical residual depression about 1045 km west of Cabo San Lucas , Baja California Sur on the same day .

Storm course

On June 27th, several hundred miles south of Central America, a large area of unorganized showers and thunderstorms formed. During the course of the day, the disturbance could intensify, so that a day later it had a medium probability of developing into a tropical depression. However, due to its proximity to the emerging tropical storm Douglas west of the system, it weakened a little. On the night of June 30th, however, the system began to strengthen again, which is why it became a high probability. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) found in the afternoon of the same day that the disturbance had intensified into a tropical storm about 195 km west-southwest of Lázaro Cárdenas , Michoacán , and therefore gave it the name Elida . Initially, the system moved in a west-northwest direction and maintained its intensity. During the course of July 1, Elida slowly began to move south, weakening a little. On the night of the following day, the National Hurricane Center downgraded the storm to a tropical depression. On the morning of July 2, this degenerated to an extra-tropical residual low when it was about 270 km south-southeast of Manzanillo , Colima .
