history

The place was initially called Los Llanitos . On April 12, 1947, the Michoacán State Congress decided to found the Melchor Ocampo del Balsas community . The city was renamed Lázaro Cárdenas in 1970 in honor of the former President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río .

The seaport of Ciudad Lázaro Cárdenas is the deepest Mexican port with an area of ​​over 2500 hectares and a depth of 16.5 m.
