The municipality ( municipio ) Comondú is located in the middle of the Mexican state Baja California Sur . The municipality had a total of 70,816 inhabitants at the 2010 census, its area amounts to 18,368 km². The main town and largest town in the municipality is Ciudad Constitución .
geography
The Municipio Comondú lies at an altitude of up to 1000 m and is entirely part of the physiographic province of the Baja California peninsula . The geology of the municipality is composed of over 40% sedimentary rock , about 25% extrusive rock , 19% aeolian sediment and 8% alluvion . The predominant soil types, each with 16 to 20 percent of the municipal area, are Leptosol , Calcisol , Arenosol and Regosol . Almost 90% of the municipality is covered by undergrowth, a good 7% are used for arable farming.
The Municipio Comondú borders the Municipios Loreto , La Paz and Mulegé as well as the Pacific and the Gulf of California .

According to the 2010 census, the municipality has 70,816 inhabitants in around 19,000 residential units. Of these, 828 people were identified as speakers of indigenous languages recorded, including 297 speakers of Nahuatl and 289 speakers of Mixtec . About 5.4% of the population were illiterate. 29,846 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which around 70% were men or 2.1% were unemployed. 6.5% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The community is divided into eight delegaciones . These are further subdivided into 33 subdelegaciones .
Localities
The Municipio Comondú comprises 651 inhabited localidades , of which the INEGI classifies Ciudad Insurgentes, Puerto San Carlos and El Potrillo as urban in addition to the main town . In the 2010 census, six towns had a population of over 1000, while 620 towns had fewer than 100 inhabitants. The biggest places are:

Attractions
The Spanish missions San José de Comondú and San Luis Gonzaga are located in this municipality. The Rocas Alijos , a series of tiny rock islands, are located about 300 km west of the coast and are just as much a part of the municipality as Isla San Diego in the Gulf of California .
