La Paz is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state Baja California Sur . The community had 251,871 inhabitants at the 2010 census, its area amounts to almost 15,900 km². The main town and largest city in the municipality is La Paz of the same name .

geography

The municipality of La Paz is located in the south of the state of Baja California Sur at an altitude of up to 2,000  m and is one entirely to the physiographic province of the peninsula Baja California . Half of the geology of the municipality is composed of sedimentary rock (especially sandstone ) with around 17% extrusive rock , around 14% alluvion and around 12% intrusive rock . The predominant soil types are the Regosol (42%) and the Leptosol (29%). A good 80% of the community area is covered by scrub, around 16% are forested.

The municipality borders in the north on the municipality Comondú , in the east on the Gulf of California , in the south on the municipality Los Cabos and in the west on the Pacific . The municipality includes several islands in the Gulf of California, including Isla San José , Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla Cerralvo .

According to the 2010 census, the municipality has 251,871 inhabitants in around 70,000 residential units. Of these, 2,509 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 794 speakers of Mixtec and 599 speakers of Nahuatl . About 2.3% of the population were illiterate. 114,212 inhabitants were registered as economically active, of which approx. 64% were men and 4.4% were unemployed. 2.8% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The municipality of La Paz comprises 1044 inhabited localidades , of which the INEGI classifies Todos Santos, El Centenario and El Manchón as urban in addition to the main town . Eight towns had a population of over 1000 in the 2010 census, 1008 towns had fewer than 100 inhabitants. The biggest places are:
