Loreto is a municipality in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur . The municipality has 16,738 inhabitants (2010 census) and an area of ​​4,637 km². The main town and largest town in the municipality is Loreto of the same name . The municipality was formed in 1992 from parts of the Municipio Comondú .

geography

The municipality of Loreto is located in the east of the state of Baja California Sur at an altitude of up to 1600  m . It belongs entirely to the physiographic province of the Baja California peninsula . The geology of the municipality is made up of 65% extrusive rock , 25% sedimentary rock and 9% alluvions , the predominant soil types are the Leptosol (56%), Regosol (18%) and Vertisol (11%). 99% of the community area is covered with undergrowth.

The municipality of Loreto borders the municipalities Mulegé and Comondú as well as the Gulf of California . The municipality also includes several islands in the Gulf of California, including Isla Carmen , Isla Coronados , Isla Monserrat and Isla Santa Cruz .

According to the 2010 census, the municipality has 16,738 inhabitants in around 4,600 residential units. Of these, 304 people were registered as speakers of an indigenous language , including 60 speakers of Mazatec and 55 speakers of Zapotec . About 3.3% of the population were illiterate. 7,475 residents were registered as economically active, of which around 71% were men and 3.3% were unemployed. 10.2% of the population lived in extreme poverty.

The municipality of Loreto comprises 147 inhabited localidades , of which the INEGI only classifies the main town as urban. In the 2010 census, six towns had a population of over 100. These places are:
