Distribution of Zapotec in Oaxaca

Zapotec (Zapotec diidxazá ) is an indigenous language in Mexico or a group of closely related languages spoken by the Zapotec ethnic group . Together with the Chatino language, it belongs to a branch of the eastern Otomangue languages, which in turn belong to the Otomangue language family (together with Otomí, Chinantek, Popoloca, Tlapanek and Mixtec).

Zapotec is spoken by over 750,000 people, particularly in the state of Oaxaca and parts of Veracruz . Due to the geographical fragmentation of the language area, there are widely differing regional variants. SIL International divides Zapotec into several individual languages.

Zapotec is a tonal language . Usually it follows the sentence structure verb-subject-object (VSO).
