geography
Isla Coronados is 10 km northeast of Loreto , the main town of the municipality on the Baja California Peninsula ; the southwest tip of the island is only 2 km off the coast of the peninsula. The island is 4 km long, up to 2.4 km wide and has an area of 7.2 km². It is of volcanic origin and consists of a 282 m high volcanic cone in the north of the island and a flat, sandy part in the south with a spit about 1 km long . At the southwest tip of Isla Coronados, Punta el Bajo , there is a 12 m high lighthouse. The majority of the arid and uninhabited island is part of the Bahía de Loreto National Park, founded in July 1996 , only a small part in the north is outside. The island also belongs - with 243 other islands - to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage "Islands and Protected Areas in the Gulf of California" ( Spanish Islas y áreas protegidas del Golfo de California ).
