Man Haron Monis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Man Haron Monis ( Persian مان هارون مؤنس; * January 19, 1964 in Borudscherd , Iran ; † December 16, 2014 in Sydney , Australia ) was an Iranian Islamic preacher and hostage-taker who most recently enjoyed asylum in Australia. On December 15, 2014, Monis was identified as the person responsible for the hostage-taking in Sydney and was killed by the police when he stormed a café in which he had holed up initially with 17 hostages.

Living in Iran and emigrating to Australia

Haron was born as Mohammad Hassan Manteghi in Iran , where he claims to have worked as ayatollah . In 1996 he applied for political asylum in Australia and gave himself the name Man Haron Monis , for which he received the title Sheikh ( English for Sheikh ; Arabic شيخ) added. In an interview with ABC Radio National's The Religion Report , Monis claimed that he had dealings with Iranian intelligence and that his wife and children were suspicious of his criticism of the regime, his access to classified information and his liberal interpretation of the Islam as Ayatollah was imprisoned and he himself was persecuted.

Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moghaddam , head of the Iranian police force, told the London-based Persian-language television channel Manoto1 that Monis had a "dark and long history of violence and fraud" in Iran and ran a travel agency in 1996, the head of which he estimated 750 to Embezzled 800 million rials (≈ 160,000 €) before he fled to Malaysia and from there to Australia. Ahmadi-Moghaddam said: "It took 4 years to gather evidence of Manteghi's identity documents and we passed this on to the Australian police, but since Australia does not have an extradition agreement with Iran, he was not extradited to Iran." The state news agency IRNA reported that Haron was wanted by Interpol and that Iran had provided the Australian government with information about Haron's criminal past and his spiritual and religious status. Regardless, he was granted asylum in Australia. The Iranian Foreign Ministry's press spokeswoman , Marsieh Afcham , echoed the Iranian government's astonishment that the Australian authorities had been informed about Haron's criminal past but had not responded.

Haron was initially a supporter of the Shiite interpretation of Islam , which is the majority religion in Iran. In Australia he switched to the Sunni interpretation, radicalized himself and became a supporter of the Islamic State .

Accusation of feigning religious qualifications

At the end of 2007, Ikebal Patel, head of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils , said that Haron was not known to any Islamic community and that he was considered a con man who deliberately provoked anti-Islamic resentment.

In January 2008, the leader of the Australian Shia , Kamal Mousselmani, told The Australian that Haron was not a "real spiritual leader of the Shia" and that there was "no Ayatollah in Australia" . Mousselmani went on to say, "Because of the way he writes his fatwas , I don't think he is a Shia Muslim."

Letter campaign

Together with his colleague and partner Amirah Droudis, Haron started a campaign in which he wrote letters to the families of fallen soldiers as a protest against the stationing of Australian troops in Afghanistan. In these letters, Haron described the soldiers as murderers and urged the families to ask the government to withdraw troops from Afghanistan. According to High Court Judge Heydon, Haron wrote a letter comparing the fallen son of a letter recipient to a pig and an unclean animal. He called the son's body "contaminated". He called it “the dirty body of a pig” and compared it to Adolf Hitler . Haron was arrested for "using the post office or similar services to threaten, harass and cause offense".

Haron appeared in court on November 10, 2009 and stated through his lawyer that he was a peace activist. He chained himself to the courthouse in protest of the charges. The court banned Haron from writing letters to the families of fallen British soldiers as part of his activities.

In December 2011, Haron appealed to the Court of Criminal Appeal in Sydney, arguing that the charges against him were invalid because they violated his constitutionally implied freedom to express political opinion. A panel of three judges unanimously rejected the appeal.

In the next instance before the High Court of Australia , a panel of six judges voted 3 to 3 in a tie. Although the High Court of Australia usually has seven judges, one seat was vacant and a successor had not been determined at the time of Haron's appeal hearing. Since no majority decided in the sense of Haron's appeal, the decisions of the previous instances remained valid.

Murder investigation

On November 15, 2013, Haron was charged by the New South Wales Police with an accomplice in the murder of his ex-wife Noleen Hayson Pal, who was stabbed and set on fire on April 21, 2013 in an apartment in Werrington . His partner, Amirah Droudis, was also charged with the murder of Pal.

On December 12, 2013, Haron and Amirah were released on bail by the Penrith Local Court. The judge saw gaps in the results of the investigation and called for further investigations. According to the prosecutor, Monis claims that the Iranian secret police and the Australian Security Intelligence Organization tried to accuse him of the murder.

On January 22, 2014, Haron declared that he would defend himself and requested access to documents that the ASIO was supposed to have held about him. He continued to call the charges against him a conspiracy. His request to inspect ASIO documents was rejected by the court due to lack of jurisdiction. Haron then demonstrated outside the courthouse, wearing chains and claiming that he had been tortured in prison. He called his charge a political measure.

Sexual harassment allegation

On March 14, 2014, Haron was arrested for sexually and immorally assaulting a woman who was seeking spiritual healing from him after reading an advertisement from Haron in a local newspaper. Haron had claimed that he was an expert in astrology , numerology, meditation and black magic .

hostage taking

On December 15, 2014, Monis took 17 customers and employees hostage at a Lindt Chocolate Café on Martin Place in downtown Sydney. Monis gave political motives for the act, some hostages had to hold a black banner with the Arab Shahada against a window. 16 hours after the hostage situation began, the police stormed the café at 2:14 a.m. local time. Restaurant manager Tori Johnson , attorney Katrina Dawson and Man Haron Monis were killed during the hostage rescue, and four other people were injured.
