Place description

There are numerous historic buildings on Martin Place, which are towered over by high-rise glass buildings. There you will find, for example, the Reserve Bank of Australia , Commonwealth Bank of Australia , Macquarie Bank , the General Post Office of Sydney , Seven Network , Australian Television Station (ATN) and other important buildings. The square was laid out in 1891 and is named in honor of James Martin , the sixth Prime Minister of New South Wales and Australian Minister of Justice . Since 1927, which is ANZAC - cenotaph there, in 1971 the place was declared a pedestrian zone. At the end of Macquarie Street is Sydney Hospital , the oldest hospital in Australia (1788).

On 15-16 December 2014 there was a 16-hour hostage situation in a Lindt Chocolate Café on Martin Place. 17 customers and employees were taken hostage by Man Haron Monis , the hostage-taking was classified as a terrorist attack by the police. The hostage-taking was ended at 2:14 a.m. by the storming of special forces, three people, including the hostage-taker, were killed and four others were injured.

The largest Christmas tree in Sydney is put up on Martin Place every year and a memorial ceremony is held every April 25th on the occasion of ANZAC Day .

Today there are numerous cafes, bars and restaurants on the square, and concerts are also held.
