Katrina Dawson

Katrina Dawson (born September 9, 1976 , † December 16, 2014 in Sydney ) was an Australian lawyer ( barrister ) who was killed while being held hostage in a café in Sydney.

Life

Katrina Dawson attended the private girls' school Ascham in Sydney and earned the Higher School Certificate in 1994. She then began studies at the University of Sydney , which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (1998) and a Bachelor of Laws (2000). This was followed by a master’s degree from the University of New South Wales (Sydney). She was admitted in 2005 and most recently worked at Eight Selborne Chambers in Sydney with a focus on business law. She was a member of the New South Wales Bar Association. In addition, she volunteered to provide legal advice to the Redfern Legal Center .

She was buried with her family one day before the official memorial services and a memorial service at the University of Sydney.

Dawson left three children and her husband.

After their death, the Dawson family established the Katrina Dawson Foundation , which aims to advance the education of young women.

hostage taking

At the time of the hostage situation, Dawson was with a colleague in the Lindt Cafe in Sydney. After about 16 hours in the hand of the hostage taker, the owner of the café, Tori Johnson , tried to disarm the hostage taker and was shot dead. The police then stormed the building, from which a number of other hostages were able to escape. According to some sources, Dawson suffered a heart attack in the storm and died on the way to the hospital, while other sources report that she tried to protect a pregnant colleague from being shot and was killed herself in the process.
