career

Sharmarke belongs to the Somali clan of the Majerteen- Darod and is the son of Abdirashid Ali Shermarke , the country's first prime minister and president from 1967 until he was assassinated in 1969. He is also a Canadian citizen and grew up in the United States and Canada , studying political science at Carleton University in Ottawa . For the United Nations he worked as a diplomat in Sierra Leone , Sri Lanka and in Darfur in Sudan . Sharmarke was slated for the post of Ambassador to Somalia to the United States .

Prime Minister of Somalia

On February 13, 2009, he was nominated by President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed as the new Prime Minister of Somalia's transitional government . The transitional parliament elected him to this office with 414 votes to 9.

The reasons for choosing Sharmarke include his clan membership (according to the constitution, the president, prime minister and speaker of parliament must belong to three different large clans, and the Majerteen-Darod left the government with the resignation of President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed ), his connections to the Somali diaspora and to the United Nations as well as the fact that he was never involved in the Somalia civil war .

Sharmarke named improving the humanitarian situation, returning internally displaced people to their hometowns and reconciliation with opponents of the transitional government as priorities.

Sharmarke's appointment was condemned by al-Shabaab . Sharmarke called for reconciliation and the creation of unity in Somalia. On September 21, 2010, Sharmarke resigned, citing a crisis in the government and the increasing insecurity in Somalia.
