Mohammed Ali Samatar

Mohammed Ali Samatar ( 1931 - August 19, 2016 in Virginia ) was a general in the Somali army and an important member of the Somalia government under Siad Barre . He was Minister of Defense from 1980 to 1986 . From February 1, 1987 to September 3, 1990, he was the country's first prime minister since Barre came to power in a military coup in 1969 and abolished that post.

Samatar last lived in Fairfax , Virginia. In 2004, several Somalis filed a lawsuit against him with the help of the Center for Justice and Accountability organization in the USA, alleging that he was jointly responsible for extensive human rights violations by the Somali army in the 1980s.
