  • Donetsk / Ukraine : At least 32 miners are killed in a devastating gas explosion in the Sassjadko coal mine in Donetsk Oblast . The pro-Russian separatists who control the area are preventing Ukrainian rescue workers from accessing the scene of the accident.
  • New Delhi / India : A court bans the broadcasting of the documentary India's Daughter , which deals with the group administration and fatal abuse of a young woman in 2012, on the grounds that an interview with a rapist included in it threatened public order. While the Interior Minister Rajnath Singh and the Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu defend the broadcast ban, the British director of the film, Leslee Udwin, evaluates the procedure as arbitrary censorship .

  • Astana / Kazakhstan : Due to an oversupply, the Kazakh energy ministry has imposed a temporary import ban on Russian gas and diesel oil in order to protect domestic markets. Energy Minister Vladimir Shkolnik has announced that Kazakhstan will be able to supply itself with gas and oil products from 2016.
  • Elsteraue / Germany : The honorary mayor Markus Nierth of the local community of Tröglitz sees his family and himself personally endangered by repeated demonstrations against the accommodation of 40 refugees in the village, announced by the NPD district councilor Steffen Thiel, his resignation on March 5th will be nationwide on March 9th. March reported in the media.
  • Shinyanga / Tanzania : Heavy rains lead to massive floods in the Kahama district in the Shinyanga region in northern Tanzania. At least 42 people are killed.

  • Abidjan / Ivory Coast : For being partly responsible for the wave of violence following the Ivorian presidential elections in 2010 , the former first wife Simone Gbagbo is sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a court in Abidjan, twice as much as requested by the public prosecutor. Critics see the process as politically motivated.
  • Bago / Myanmar : In Letpadan in the Bago district , the police brutally stop a student protest for a democratic education law. On a march towards the port city of Rangoon, which will begin in Mandalay in January, the participants demonstrate for independent student associations, a modernization of the teaching program and changes in university admissions. The government would like to respond to some of the demands, but a parliamentary resolution has not yet been passed.
  • Bogotá / Colombia : More than two years after the start of peace negotiations with the left-wing guerrilla organization FARC, the Colombian government is temporarily suspending air strikes against the rebels. If the FARC also adheres to the ceasefire, the ceasefire can be extended.
  • Islamabad / Pakistan : Around three months after an Islamist attack on a school with almost 150 dead, the Pakistani government is lifting a moratorium on the execution of the death penalty , which has been in force since 2008, and is ordering the resumption of executions in all provinces.

  • Cape Town / South Africa : physicians report that in mid-December at the University of Stellenbosch successfully completed the first penis - transplant was performed. The patient received the fully functional organ from a deceased person.
  • Sharm El-Sheikh / Egypt : Egypt is soliciting donors at an investor conference. Critics in the North African country fear a wave of privatization and rising unemployment.
  • Valparaíso / Chile : A fire breaks out at a dump, widens to severe forest fires and threatened the port cities of Valparaíso and Viña del Mar . Thousands of people have to be evacuated temporarily. The state of emergency applies to both coastal towns. The fire has so far claimed one dead and 32 injured.

  • Brasília / Brazil : Hundreds of thousands protest in various cities in Brazil against the government of President Dilma Rousseff . The corruption scandal at the state-controlled oil company Petrobras , in which bribes have flowed to politicians and parties, including the ruling party of the president, is particularly criticized .
  • Bregenz / Austria : In the municipal council elections in Vorarlberg , the ÖVP becomes the strongest force with losses and reaches 34 percent. The FPÖ and the Greens are each increasing slightly, reaching 14 and 11 percent respectively. The SPÖ has to accept a slight loss of votes and reaches almost 10 percent.
  • Klagenfurt / Austria : In those 37 municipalities in which no decision was made in the mayoral elections in Carinthia on March 1, 2015, runoff elections will be held, in which the challenger Maria-Luise Mathiaschitz ( SPÖ ) , among others in the state capital of Klagenfurt, will be current mayor Christian Scheider ( FPÖ ) prevailed.
  • Kontiolahti / Finland : The most successful nation at the 47th Biathlon World Championships in Kontiolahti, eastern Finland, is France with 6 medals, including three gold medals. The most successful athlete with four medals won is the French Marie Dorin-Habert .
  • Lahore / Pakistan : In a double attack by two suicide bombers from a Taliban group on Christian churches during the service, at least 17 people are killed and 80 others are injured in the east Pakistani metropolis of Lahore. After the double attack in the impoverished Christian neighborhood of Yohana Abad in Lahore, an angry mob lynched two people who were accused of helping the attackers .
  • Port Vila / Vanuatu : After the devastating cyclone Pam , the extent of the devastation cannot yet be foreseen. Many of the 80 islands have been cut off from the outside world, villages have been destroyed, the capital heavily damaged, and telecommunications connections have been interrupted. The Vanuatu government declares a national emergency. Meanwhile, relief efforts from Australia and New Zealand are underway . In the neighboring country of Tuvalu , according to the head of government Enele Sopoaga, almost every second resident was hit hard by the cyclone. The Tuvaluan government has also declared a national emergency.

  • Tórshavn / Faroe Islands : There is a total solar eclipse in the northern hemisphere . The totality zone runs over the Faroe Islands, the North Atlantic and Svalbard . While on the Faroe Islands, which experienced a rush of tourists as a result of the event, heavy clouds blocked the view of the sun, the solar eclipse on Svalbard was easy to observe. The feared bottleneck in the German power grid due to strong fluctuations in solar power did not occur.

  • Ankara / Turkey : A major power outage, including in the largest cities of Istanbul and Ankara, paralyzes large parts of Turkey for hours: local public transport with underground trains and trams no longer works, as does ATMs, factories and banks close, department stores such as Hospitals are switching to emergency power supplies. Energy Minister Taner Yıldız does not want to rule out a cyber attack on central computers used to regulate the power supply.
  • Funafuti / Tuvalu : In the parliamentary elections, which have been postponed by two weeks because of cyclone Pam , twelve of the fifteen independent MPs will be re-elected.
