Expansion plans (as of December 2014)

The Trans-Anatolian Pipeline is a 1850-kilometer natural gas pipeline planned by the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline ( TANAP ) Project and commissioned in June 2018. It runs through Turkey and connects the Transadriatic Pipeline (TAP) via the South Caucasus Pipeline with the Shah Denis gas field in Azerbaijan . An extension towards Austria would have been possible via the planned Nabucco-West-Pipeline , but this project was terminated in the planning stage.

history

First, the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline project was announced on November 17, 2011 at the Third Black Sea Energy and Economic Forum in Istanbul. On December 26, 2011, Turkey and Azerbaijan agreed to set up a consortium to build and operate the pipeline. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev stated: “The TANAP project is not like the other major agreements. It's a historic deal. Many more countries can join the project in the future. "

Construction began on March 17, 2015 at Kars . The construction costs are said to have amounted to 10 billion US dollars . At the beginning, 16 billion cubic meters of natural gas are to be transported annually, after which the transport capacity is to increase to 31 billion cubic meters per year by 2031. On September 30, 2016, the Azerbaijani parliament ratified the agreement on the energy project.

The pipeline was put into operation in June 2018.

financing

The European Investment Bank (EIB) at times considered making a loan of 600 million euros available for TANAP. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provided Azerbaijan with a loan of US $ 500 million for the construction of the 1,850-kilometer Trans-Anatolian natural gas pipeline . The World Bank is also participating in the construction of the Trans-Anatolian natural gas pipeline with a loan of US $ 800 million. The total cost of the project amounts to 9 billion euros .
