Florence Arthaud (born October 28, 1957 in Boulogne-Billancourt ; † March 9, 2015 at Villa Castelli , La Rioja province , Argentina ) was a French sailor and skipper .

Career

She was the daughter of the publisher Jacques Arthaud , who had once headed the Arthaud publishing house ( Flammarion group). In France she was nicknamed "the little fiancee of the Atlantic" (French: la petite fiancée de l'Atlantique ) since the 1990s .

She won important sailing regattas . In 1981 she was second in the TwoSTAR (rating of monohulls ). In 1990 she was the first woman to win the overall ranking of the prestigious Route du Rhum and third place in the TwoSTAR (overall ranking). In the same year she was chosen by the sports newspaper L'Équipe as France's Sportsman (in) of the year (“ Champion des champions ”); so far (as of 2014) it was the only time that this title went to a sailor. In 1990 Arthaud also recorded the successful song Flo on French radio stations in a duet with the singer Pierre Bachelet .

Arthaud died on March 9, 2015 in a collision between two helicopters in La Rioja Province , Argentina .
