The Bago region ( Burmese ပဲခူးတိုင်းဒေသကြီး , BGN / PCGN : pèkudaingdethagyi; also Pegu, Paigu; until 2008 Bago division ) is one of the 15 administrative units of the state of Myanmar .

Of all the regions and states of Myanmar, the Bago region has the most inland borders: in the north-west it borders on the Magwe , in the north on the Mandalay, in the south on the Yangon and in the south-west on the Irrawaddy region. In the east its longest border runs with the Kayin state, in the southeast the Bago region shares a small border strip with the Mon state and finally touches the Arakan (Rakhine) state in the west. Almost half of the country is covered by the Irrawaddy delta .

The Bago region covers an area of 39,404 km². This makes it the second largest region in Burma after the Sagaing region and fourth among all states and regions.

At the beginning of 2005 the population was according to official figures 5,555,000; According to the 2014 census, the population is 4,867,373 people, the proportion of the rural population is 78%. The largest city is the capital of the same name, Bago . The region is divided into four districts: Bago , Toungoo , Pyay and Thayawady .

In 1891 the division comprised five districts: the city of Rangoon , Hanthawadi (formerly also known as Rangoon), Bago , Tharawadi and Prome . The area was 24,084 km².

The inhabitants are predominantly Mon (called Talaing by the Burmese).
