Kokopo (until 1919 Herbertshöhe ) is the seventh largest city of Papua New Guinea and the capital of the province of East New Britain on the island of New Britain .

geography

Kokopo is located 30 km from the former provincial capital Rabaul , can be reached on the Kokopo Highway and has an airport.

In 1980 Kokopo had 2,200 inhabitants. After the devastating eruption of the Tavurvur volcano on September 19, 1994, most of Rabaul's residents fled here and settled here permanently. As a result, Kokopo became the provincial capital, as the place offered more security due to its protected location and already had an urban infrastructure . In 2000, Kokopo's population had grown to 20,262, almost ten times that of 1980.

The neighboring village of Vunamami is also counted as part of Kokopo , as both places have grown together through the refugees from Rabaul. Also Vunapope now belongs to Kokopo.

history

At the time of the German New Guinea colony, Kokopo was called Herbertshöhe and was the capital of the entire colony and seat of the governor from 1899 to 1910 .

Emma Kolbe (Queen Emma of the South Pacific) had a house in Kokopo, but it was destroyed during World War II.

The Creole language Unserdeutsch emerged around 1900 near the then city of Herbertshöhe.
