Vunapope

Vunapope is a district of Kokopo in East New Britain Province (ENBP), Papua New Guinea . The largest Catholic mission station with various convents in Melanesia is located here .
Kokopo has been the provincial capital of ENBP since 2005
St. Mary's Hospital Vunapope, a hospital with various departments, which has existed as a health center since 1930, is also located in Vunapope, the district 1 km from the town center. Since then, doctors from Germany have worked here several times for several years. This is due to the fact that Kokopo, the former Herbertshöhe, was the administrative seat of German New Guinea from 1899–1910was. The hospital has a nationwide reputation; patients also come from neighboring provinces. In addition to six doctors, 80 nurses keep the business going. In addition to the mission, the cathedral and the mission hospital, Vunapope also has numerous large shops, a sports field, large jetties, a helicopter landing pad and several larger coconut plantations. The only German-based Creole language, Unserdeutsch, was developed in the Vunapope mission during colonial times .
On September 29, 2008, a new cathedral of the Archdiocese of Rabaul was inaugurated by Archbishop Karl Hesse in Vunapope , which can accommodate up to 1,400 worshipers on an area of 2,000 m².
