BG Group plc ( BG ) was a UK energy company headquartered in Reading , Berkshire , UK . The company was listed in the FTSE 100 .

Company history

The company was formed in February 1997 by splitting from British Gas plc in Centrica and BG plc (renamed 1999: BG Group plc). Outside the UK, BG Group has the right to use the company name "British Gas"; within the UK, Centrica is entitled to use the company name .

In 2000 a company division was spun off as the Lattice Group . While BG took over the natural gas fields and other assets, Lattice received the natural gas transport division. Lattice took over Transco. In 2002 Lattice merged with National Grid . In April 2015, Royal Dutch Shell agreed to acquire BG Group for £ 47 billion. The takeover was completed in February 2016.

BG's main business was the search for natural gas . It owned some natural gas pipelines and had shares in several power plants. The company operated worldwide, with only a small part of its activities in the UK. The Brazilian natural gas and oil company Comgás belonged to the Brazilian state-owned company Companhia Energética Sáo Paulo (CESP) until April 1999. CESP was sold to the British energy company BG Group and the oil company Royal Dutch Shell .
