The 14th European Maccabi Games (EMG2015) were held in Berlin from July 27th to August 5th, 2015 . The European Maccabiade takes place every four years, two years after the Maccabiade in Israel. Germany had been chosen as the venue for the first time. Over 2000 athletes from 36 countries took part, who competed in 19 sports. The Olympiapark in Berlin is deliberately chosen as the main venue for the Games . Were at this location during the time of National Socialism , the Summer Olympics of 1936 held, the participation of Jewish athletes, however, prevented.

sports

The games were played in the following 19 sports: badminton , basketball , bridge , dressage , fencing , field hockey , soccer , futsal , golf , half marathon , chess , swimming , squash , tennis , ten pin bowling , table tennis , triathlon , volleyball , water polo . Entry to the competitions was free for all spectators.

Opening ceremony

The official opening ceremony of the largest Jewish sporting event in Europe took place on July 28, 2015 in the Waldbühne , where the gymnastics competitions were held at the 1936 Olympic Games in Nazi Germany . Federal President Joachim Gauck took over the patronage of the 14th European Maccabi Games and gave the opening speech. Before that there had been no head of state to patronize a European Maccabiade. The opening ceremony was designed by Israeli producer Ran Tzahor . The evening was moderated by Palina Rojinski . The traditional lighting of the Maccabi fire took place for the first time by a group of motorcyclists - in memory of the motorcyclists who carried the news of the Maccabiah into the world on a tour across Europe in 1931. Among other things, the German-Muslim singer Adel Tawil and the American-Jewish artist Matisyahu performed together.

accommodation

The 2300 athletes were accommodated in the Estrel , Berlin's largest hotel. This was the first time that all participants lived under one roof during a Maccabiade.

Sport sponsors

The first games in Germany were supported by prominent "sports sponsors", including the table tennis professional and Olympic medalist Dimitrij Ovtcharov and the swimmer Sarah Poewe . She was the first Jewish athlete to win a medal (bronze in 4 × 100 m medals) for Germany at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens after 1945 . Marcel Reif was the ambassador for the European Maccabi Games 2015 in Berlin .

Quotes

The choice of the venue had a political meaning, with the participants and politicians wanting to convey a message for tolerance and openness and against anti-Semitism and racism .

  • From the opening address by Federal President Joachim Gauck: "The Maccabi Games have to a certain extent returned to their roots, because the Jewish sports movement originally emerged in Germany, also as a response to growing hostility towards Jews in society".
  • Chancellor Angela Merkel wrote in her greeting in the official magazine: “The Shoah breach of civilization committed by Germany is deeply inscribed in our memories. In view of the past, Germany can only be deeply grateful for the renewed diversity of Jewish life among us and the newly grown trust of the guests from abroad. "
  • "These are the games of reconciliation," said Alon Meyer , President of Makkabi Germany.
