The city of Baiji ( Arabic بيجي Baidschī , DMG Bayǧī ; also Beiji ) belongs to the province of Salah ad-Din ( Iraq ) and is located about 200 km north of Baghdad in the so-called Sunni Triangle . Iraq's largest oil refinery is located in the industrial city. The city has about 60,000 inhabitants.
The city is on the Baghdad Railway , its station is a railway junction, as the lines to Kirkuk and Haqlaniyya branch off from here . The city is also strategically important as it is on the road connecting Baghdad and Mosul.
Since the fall of the Saddam Hussein regime , there have been numerous attacks by insurgents and terrorists.
On January 24, 2006, the two Leipzig engineers René Bräunlich and Thomas Nitzschke were kidnapped in Baidschi . They were released on May 2, 2006 after being held hostage for 99 days.
